New Consortium Project Launched: REBORN Targets Medication-Related Jawbone Necrosis

Inborn B.V. is proud to announce its participation in REBORN (Regenerative Engineering for Bone-treatment Optimization and Recovery after Necrosis), a 24-month public-private collaborative initiative alongside Radboudumc and HAN University of Applied Sciences (Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen), supported within the ORANGE Health consortium framework.

Addressing an Unmet Clinical Need

Widely prescribed bone-strengthening therapies—essential for managing osteoporosis and oncological conditions—carry a severe, debilitating side effect: medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). In the Netherlands alone, tens of thousands of patients taking these medications are at risk, with the condition impacting up to 15% of high-risk oncology cohorts. The resulting chronic infections and exposed bone frequently necessitate invasive surgical resections and prolonged care, imposing a heavy burden on patient quality of life and the healthcare system.

Dual-Action Biomaterial Technology

The REBORN project sets out to validate a minimally invasive alternative utilizing Inborn’s biomimetic, bone-like gel technology. The formulation delivers a targeted dual mechanism:

  • Osteoconductive Scaffolding: Serves as a localized matrix that actively guides endogenous cells to rebuild healthy, vascularized bone architecture.

  • Targeted Therapeutic Delivery: Directly eradicates deep-seated microbial infections at the defect site, minimizing systemic exposure and side effects.

Preclinical Validation & Regulatory Dossier

Over the next 24 months, the consortium partners will rigorously test the gel’s safety and regenerative performance in preclinical models that closely mirror human jaw anatomy. This work will be performed, as part of the broader ORANGE Health mission to accelerate impactful biomedical innovations from bench to bedside.
